Newsletter, Where Is It?

Many have noted that there has been no newsletter since before the last reunion! There are a variety of reasons that our newsletter has gotten off track, but we are doing our best to get this train back on the rails, and you should be receiving a newsletter very soon. Hopefully this problem has been corrected and will not occur again.

Battleship Iowa Museum

The Association has recently completed an agreement with Pacific Battleship Center (PBC) for the release of all memorabilia/artifacts under our control to the Pacific Battleship Center Museum Curator. All of this material (including that being held in the Iowa State Historical Museum) will be packaged and sent to PBC soon. PBC has agreed to place these items in a Veterans Association Collection, and to utilize as many as possible in a special exhibit dedicated to USS Iowa Veterans and the Veterans Association. Members or families of members who desire to donate memorabilia should continue to send it to the Association Archivist, Ken Leff (address on website or most recent newsletter). He will forward it to PBC.

Battleship Iowa in San Pedro

I encourage you to visit the website of Pacific Battleship Center (www.PacificBattleship.com) to learn what is happening on board our ship in San Pedro, CA. Many exciting new improvements are being accomplished each week, and the crowds are huge.
The Iowan History Letter
Our Iowa History Letter has entered a new phase of its life. Shipmate Tom Helvig, the originator and first editor of The Iowan History Letter has now retired from those duties and has been relieved by our new editor-in-chief, Brad Goforth. Brad is assisted by Shipmate David Chambers. The next edition of The Iowan History Letter will be on the street in a few weeks and can be read at our website www.ussiowa.org.
Many thanks to Tom Helvig for a truly outstanding job in bringing this History Letter to life and bringing us the many colorful and exciting stories of USS Iowa and her crew.
Brad and Dave are looking for help from crew members who are willing to share their stories of life aboard Battleship Iowa. Please contact Brad at bgoforth@thesamitanhouse.org to add your story.

Iowa Point/Iowa-47 Ceremony

The annual ceremony to remember and honor our fallen shipmates who lost their lives in the 1989 accident on board USS Iowa will be held in two separate locations.
The ceremony at Iowa Point, U.S. Naval Base, Norfolk, VA will be held at 1000 April 19, 2013. The gathering and ceremony will be coordinated by Shipmate John Schultz. He may be contacted at johnnyz1234@hotmail.com.
The ceremony in San Pedro will be conducted on board Battleship Iowa at 1000 April 19, 2013. Coordinator of the ceremony is Shipmate David Canfield. He may be contacted at dcanfield@labattleship.com.

Iowa State University NROTC awards

The Association will once again be presenting awards to special NROTC midshipmen for outstanding scholarship and leadership. The ceremony will take place at the Iowa State University NROTC building. The Association will be represented by Shipmate Rick Hindman of Johnston, IA. If you think you might like to attend, contact Ken Leff for details.
