Painting, painting, painting.
It took me two-full 8hour days to paint all the parts!! |
The Hull:
I painted the entire hull "Intermediate Blue" with spray-paint. The next step
was to tape the TOP line where the "BLACK" line is. Paint that - Don't worry
about the bottom - just make it thicker than the modeler's tape you bought!
After the Black paint dries thoroughly, remove the tape. Put another path of tape down
RIGHT OVER WHAT YOU PAINTED! (Be anal-retentive about getting the TOP of the tape on the
TOP of the black line.) Tape around the entire HULL!
NOW - Using regular tape and newspaper - "paper off" the grey part of the hull
so that when you spray the RED - it will NOT get on the GREY part. THEN - you can paint
with the RED!
QUESTION: Why use Spray instead of brush?? Spray turns out MUCH better!!!
y - the IOWA is completed mostly in
this stage. I've listed some MAJOR discrepencies between Tamiya's directions and the IOWA.
-
The instructions have you
painting all kinds of crazy things aft on the fantail. DONT
PAY ATTENTION TO THEM!!! Later in these directions - you
will see HOW to paint the non-skid/teak. The IOWA was the
ONLY Battleship to be configured like this! All the others
had the non-skid come back - forward of the unrep rig!
-
Forward of Turret#1 - Port
and Starboard - the OLD GUN TUBS. (circles in the plastic).
Paint over them - IOWA did NOT have these markings in the
80's!
Other Stuff:
Just a quick list of other stuff
to pay attention to at this point
-
Tops of Turret's #2 and #3.
Paint the non-skid on tops as I have.
-
Top of Turret #1. Place the
"Straight" decal of the US Flag on top as I have.
-
SixteenInch Gun Barrels -
Tamiya says to paint part of them a "light grey" -
don't do this! Paint them as I have. The recoil parts were
BLACK - not LIGHT GREY!!! I didn't really catch till the
LAST touch-up painting - SO - See the LAST pages for the
RIGHT way to do it!!

A note on the
DIRECTIONS:
Before trying to glue together
the HULL pieces on. PUT THE STAND TOGETHER. The FIRST step is to
put the screws and rudders on. You'll need to sit the ship on
the stand for the rest of the building lest you mess those
fragile parts up (as I did!)
IF you follow the directions
about putting the pieces of the deck on - then you WILL have
problems!!! You need to glue ALL three pieces of the deck on at
ONCE!! DON'T forget to glue the turrets in place BEFORE gluing
the deck!
BEFORE gluing - make sure you
take your "X-acto" knife and get rid of all the
"Dings" on the HULL where the glue will lay AND on the
Deck Pieces!
Glue the FORWARD piece on FIRST -
Aft piece second - and the Mid-Ships piece THIRD. You'll
probably have to "gently force" it in!
